Happy 93rd Birthday Mandela

Well today is a very special day here in sunny South Africa. I woke up this morning and with such pride I put my Madiba Believer shirt on and walked out into a more equal, more beautiful world because of one special man. And today is that mans Birthday, today our Baba Madiba turns 93. He was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. This man who has become a world icon and is respected by so many. He is a wise, colour blind man, of love and compassion and this country owes him everything. He has made our world a better place to live in all through love, hope and personal sacrifice. I am so proud to call him our father. Happy Birthday Mr Mandela. We love you and stand proudly behind you.

Today Mandela has asked the world, (especially us South Africans) to donate 67 minutes of public service in his honor. Instead of gifts, he asks us to take some time out of our busy day and give back to the community. The Mandela Day campaign message is simple: Mr Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All we are asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting your chosen charity or serving your local community. Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals - for people everywhere - to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, Just like Mr Madela did.

I have chosen to make some blankets...sure it will take much longer than 67 minutes but this can be my ongoing gift to Madiba. These will either be donated to an orphanage or animal shelter. As underprivileged children and animals are closest to my heart. What will you do today? Please take this seriously, all it takes is a single hour of your day to help someone less fortunate. You don't need to make a big, dramatic gesture or a monitory gift, your time and compassion is all that is needed. No excuses people, today is a day worth celebrating and there are so many worthy causes. Mandela is a man who deserves to be honored and today we can do this by making the world a better place, even if it is just for a day. G x o x o
